Assembly:
Internationally recognized for its unique blend of African, Afro-Caribbean, modern, street-dance and jazz techniques, the Lula Washington Dance Theatre provides brilliant depictions of African American experiences, past and present. Founded in 1980, the company is one of the premier African American arts institutions on the West Coast. With a home studio and performance space in the Crenshaw district of Los Angeles, Ms. Washington and her company also regularly present at local venues such as UCLA, the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in Los Angeles and the Cerritos Center for the Arts. National performances include presentations in numerous locations, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. An interracial group that reflects a multitude of experiences and backgrounds, under the leadership of Washington this company presents a dynamic, inspirational performance that seeks to build bridges between people of different cultures and ethnic backgrounds, and to inspire and enlighten the children of Los Angeles, California and the nation.
