Who or what influenced you to start singing and how old were you when you began?
My family is very musical, so I have been exposed to many different genres. I fell in love with opera after hearing a production of Turandot at Opera Pacific when I was twelve. I have studied privately since I was fourteen.

Where would you like to perform someday if given the opportunity?
It would be an honor to sing at Carnegie Hall and the Metropolitan Opera!

How has music affected your life?
It has given me a whole new medium through which I can convey my emotions. It has connected me with my family and friends on an incredibly personal level. Music has been how I cope with fear and disappointment, and also how I celebrate. Music is the book in which I write my life.

What are your dreams/goals in life?
I would like to pursue a performance career as a classical singer. I know that this could take me in many different directions, but that's what makes it exciting!

Why do your think you were chosen to be a finalist in the Spotlight Awards? What was your greatest aid in accomplishing this?
I feel that the confidence and musicality that I have cultivated over my years of study showed in my audition. My greatest aid was knowing that leaving my best in the audition was all that I could do.

How do you balance your singing around your school work and friends?
It can be overwhelming! Homework isn't an option in my house, so I try to get that done as efficiently and quickly as I can. I try to remind myself that I have limits in every area. I can't do everything, no matter how fun it may sound! I am really intentional about protecting time with friends, as well as giving myself time to rest.

What advice would you give to a student who felt they might not be ready to do Spotlight?
Not "feeling" ready is part of the learning experience! There's a first time for everything, and Spotlight is a fantastic place to go through the audition process. Everyone is so warm, welcoming, and encouraging. Every performer gets valuable feedback that will be useful in future performance situations - DO IT!
